2020 Weddings before lockdown:

Matt & Hannah’s wedding at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens was a ‘full size’ wedding full of gorgeous flowers and lovely guests.

Their honeymoon travel plans got put on hold, but they were able to find an apartment in London for some time off.

Tom & Julia gathered 30 of their dearest friends for an outdoor ceremony before the lockdown started.

They got legally married the day before, so this day could be pure celebration.

30 person intimate weddings:

During the summer these couples were able to have 30 person weddings followed by a sit down meal with their guests.

Bobby and Steph’s wedding in Rugby had contributions from virtual guests around the world.

Alex and Amy got married near Market Harbourgh in a gorgeous 15th century church.

After Andrew & Kerry’s church wedding in Chester they had a pizza feast delivered. Guests with their bubble in separate tents around the newly weds.

Covid wedding ideas

Our favourite ideas to make the most of the COVID wedding restrictions and change them into opportunities.

  1. You no longer need to have a full 100+ guest list so you can make your wedding feel more exclusive and personal. Upgrade your invitations, personalise a treat for each person or get a photo with each guest.

  2. Take the chance to make things feel less formal if you’d like. You could arrive together. Or meet your guests for coffee before the ceremony and walk over altogether.

  3. If your guests have to sit in reserved seating, make the most of it! Label seating in fun ways or use a bag of goodies as a place name. Take it as a chance to celebrate each guest.

  4. Livestreaming your wedding needn’t be complicated, any guest with a phone can broadcast the ceremony. Having a screen showing your Zoom audience connects your in-person and online guests and allows them to have even more fun.

  5. If you have to separate the legal part from your celebration, you’ll be able to go wild with your ceremony. Include anything you like and have someone you know to lead you through your vows.

  6. It’s a great time to have a sweetheart table for just the two of you, instead of feeling you must have a traditional top table. Embrace the bubble!

  7. If you always wanted to elope but weren’t quite brave enough, this could be the perfect excuse.

  8. Throwing confetti or blowing bubbles might be out, but banners, flags, klaxons, glowsticks or sparklers are spot on.

Of course, the restrictions and advice are evolving. These weddings did their best to comply with the rules at the time. You should take our ideas together with current guidelines to come up with something that works for your wedding.

Our couples have shared their experiences of planning and rescheduling weddings in 2021, they’ve got great tips for keeping sane. You can read that blog post here.
